Signature Saugerties Brick Building, $795K
Kandy Harris | March 7, 2020This stunner of a three-story brick Victorian building in the heart of Saugerties village is looking for a new owner.
We won’t beat around the bush: This is the most visible building on Main Street, possibly even the entire village. Think the c.1930s exterior with stone, arched window frames and distinctive slate-shingled mansard roof is a knock-out? Wait until you see the 10,835-square-foot interior, divided up into three marvelous levels. Upstairs from the ground floor – which houses an antiques mart – is a light-filled, 3,100-square foot, three-bedroom apartment complete with wood floors and high ceilings…
…but, the true crowning jewel of this building is the third floor, a gymnasium-sized space currently used for a variety of local creative endeavors, including open mics, dance and yoga classes, live theater performances, and so much more. In addition to 25-foot ceilings, this floor includes bathrooms, a kitchen, and a bedroom.
The rumor is that this was once a speak-easy during Prohibition, which might be local legend. We do know, however, that the space was formerly used as an Odd Fellows meeting hall, and we find that just as intriguing. Regardless of its lore (and its need for some fixing up, hence the fact that it’s listed for around $70-per-square-foot), this mixed-use building is one of our favorite places in Saugerties village.
