A disco ball sets the mood; follow BSP @bspkingston on Instagram

Unless you’re brand spankin’ new to Upstater (in which case, welcome) you have heard much ado about this Uptown Kingston Getaway we’re hosting for you, dear reader. In case you did miss it, here’s your chance to enter. Last week, we took a look at the Stockade Tavern. This week, the spotlight is on BSP, which has ever so graciously added on a set of tickets for the getaway’s lucky winner. Much like we had for the Stockade, we here at Upstater went to check out BSP. It was on our tab, but, like we’ve said before, we just care about you that much.

The building in which BSP lives was originally a vaudeville and movie house. The 13 year old venue has taken inspiration from its past while creating and maintaining an image all its own. Unlike some of us, ahem, who spent our early teens listening to bad music and sulking in our rooms, BSP is like the cool, older brother with great taste and a playlist full of stuff you took credit for in front of your friends. The venue itself is pretty basic, but it gets the job done. BSP is not as flashy as vaudeville or as gigantic as the Garden, but a quick perusal of its calendar displays diversity and affordability.

Conehead Buddha performs at BSP on 8/21

But hey, guess what? If you win: screw affordable! It’s free! For the rest of us, it’s $10 at the door to see Conehead Buddha on August 21st. As the event page says, CB are local legends who describe themselves as “a bit of ska, latin, funk and rock- all mixed up into a tasty stew.”  A quick listen on their Spotify attests to this. The music is fun and campy; the perfect way to start a weekend upstate. CB boasts an array of musicians and instruments, from brass to electric guitar. Mike Dunn, as the band’s bio page says, even plays something called a “moog” which, if my Google search was correct, is a kind of synthesizer. He is one of the 8 musicians who make up this eclectic ensemble, sure to kick off a getaway weekend right. Start the night at the Stockade with the Summer Spritz we told you about and you’ll be smiling in no time.

Uptown Swing performs at BSP on 8/23

Jam bands aren’t for everyone, but that’s okay because BSP has all genres covered. The same weekend, on Sunday night, is Uptown Swing. In September, Spirit Family Reunion is playing the 11th and Holly Miranda will be there the 20th. Whatever tunes you’re into, the Uptown Kingston Getaway will get you groovin’. Or, at least, the drinks from the Stockade and Ester’s Wine and Spirits will.

Oh and, by the way, did we mention? On August 15th (the last day to enter to win) the 3rd Annual Chronogram Block Party will be taking over BSP for a late night dance party. I hear the staff has some pretty sweet dance moves. Just saying.
