Bummer of the Week: Opus 40 is on the Endangered Landscapes List

We were bummed to hear from the Daily Freeman that Opus 40, one of our favorite landmarks in all of upstate NY, has been placed on a notable preservation group’s 11 most endangered landscapes in the country. The group, Cultural Landscape Foundation, included Opus 40 on the list due to its much-needed Hurricane Sandy and Irene-related repair and maintenance work. That work, of course, requires funds that the sculpture park/art installation just doesn’t have. Oh, hey! You know what would help? Let’s all go visit when it reopens Memorial Day weekend! $10/adult gets you in the door, students and seniors are $7, and $3 for children 6-12 years. Opus 40 is one of the area’s most fascinating spots. Starting in 1938, sculptor Harvey Fite constructed Opus 40 over the course of 37 years. The 6.5 acre park is located in Saugerties and populated with undulating blue stone sculptures and rock formations. During the summer, the park plays host to outdoor music events and welcomes scores of visitors every day. It’s completely worth the 10-spot to wander around and absorb some tranquility.
