Car-Free Country House: Dover Plains European Colonial, $329,000

  |  February 29, 2012

The three peaks on this house are what caught our eyes while we scanned the Metro-North Harlem Line-accessible town of Dover Plains for properties. And then we discovered that it’s on four acres with a stream-fed pond and one and a half miles from the train station, making it our pick for this week’s Car Free Country House.

Dover Plains is a small hamlet in eastern Dutchess County, about 30 minutes from Poughkeepsie and the Hudson River, and not far from the Connecticut border. 148 Cart Road is within walking or biking distance to Dover Elementary School, a grocery store, pharmacies, restaurants and a wine shop in Dover Plains proper.

The inside is a roomy 2,900 square feet, and the interior looks nice and bright, although we might consider changing the wall color in the kitchen to something less….salmon-y. The additional laundry room space is handy.

Cart Road is a country road, and this house is set far enough off of it that even the modest road noise won’t be a disturbance. The neighbors aren’t close and there’s a buffer of trees separating them from the house, anyway. Looks like a great place for kids to run and play in a safe environment, yet still close to public transportation and the convenience of Dover Plains.
