Car-Free Country House: Woodstock Arts & Crafts, $395,000
Kandy Harris | October 9, 2013Every week, we try our best to resist the urge to make every Car-Free Country House something from Hudson or Woodstock, simply because those two towns offer, in our opinion, the most reasonable option for living without a car in most of the Upstater region. Hudson is a stop on Amtrak, and Woodstock has a Trailways bus stop right in the center of town. Walking or bicycling to pick up groceries or other necessities are much easier to do in those two places than, say, Rhinecliff (no stores nearby) or Margaretville (stores nearby, but one could suffer from serious cabin fever without a car up there). Cold Spring and Beacon are decent options, if you can afford Cold Spring, and if you can manage to find a house in Beacon that’s both close to the train station and necessities.
So here we are. Back in Woodstock. This house is seems to have lept from the pages of a storybook, complete with whimsical yellow stars painted on the blue background of the roof overhang. The interior includes wood floors, a fire place, exposed brick, and a sleek, modern kitchen. There’s even a porch swing and a little outbuilding with window flower boxes. It’s so cute, we can barely contain ourselves. The Trailways bus stops less than a half-mile away.
