Car-Free Upstate: Uptown Kingston Two-Story, $218,000
Kandy Harris | May 21, 2014Oh, Kingston. You are such a conundrum. Good housing stock at affordable prices, sky-high taxes that are a real buzzkill. Still, it never hurts to look particularly at those bargains because that, among a myriad other reasons, is where you’ll find the slightly more tolerable taxes. Here’s one in a nice neighborhood uptown, close to some good food, shops, art galleries, pubs, etc. as well as the Trailways bus station, which stops on Washington Avenue across the street from Dietz Stadium. So it’s walking distance (there are sidewalks, so no worries about narrow shoulders/traffic), but cabbing it might be a little more reasonable. Yes, the yard is small. It’s a residential neighborhood with nearby neighbors. That’s usually the trade-off for trying to live upstate without at car. Anyway, the house has an attractive craftsman-style interior, and a solarium with an attached deck overlooking the yard. Not too shabby for city living, taxes notwithstanding.
