Gothic Brick Victorian with 8 Bedrooms and a Rock-Bottom Price of $279,900

  |  February 20, 2019

Looking for a cheap Victorian house with lots and lots of room? Head north to Cohoes, NY.

Used to be, we could head to Kingston, Saugerties, Catskill, Hudson, or Newburgh and find a handful of big, affordably-priced Victorian homes among the listings. Not so easy to find these days in those areas, but, if you’re willing to drive the I-87 Thruway north to the Capital District, you can still find them. Cohoes is located where the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers converge, about 15 minutes north of Albany. And, this brick Gothic Victorian sits on a half-acre lot steps from Cohoes businesses, parks, and trails.

As for the house, itself? It’s gracious, gorgeous, packed with vintage details, and cheap. Absurdly cheap. $68-per-square-foot cheap.

Embossed tin ceilings are the order of the day within the 5,400-square-foot interior, along with crown moldings, decorative trim, light fixture medallions, hardwood floors, marble fireplaces (including one in the kitchen), and floor-to-ceiling windows.

There are eight bedrooms available here, as well as an additional mother-in-law/au pair apartment. Heads up (literally) on the M-I-L apartment: A network of PVC pipes runs around through just about every room.

Plenty of parking to the rear of the house in the lot or the three-car garage. From here, you can take your bike to the Cohoe Heritage Trail, which will take you north to Overlook Park for views of Cohoes Falls on the Mohawk River. Head over the Peebles Island State Park on the other side of the Mohawk for more walking trails and bald eagle spotting opportunities.
