Our Catskill Weekend Getaway Contest is in full swing and we hope you’ve been an active participant. If not there’s still time to enter before the deadline on November 1st! This isn’t a hard sell: the winner receives 2 lift tickets up Hunter Mountain, a private wine tasting for 6 at the Hudson-Chatham Winery, and a 2-night stay and dinner at Deer Mountain Inn. This week we take a look at where you’ll be sleeping and dining: Deer Mountain Inn, the modernized rustic lodge nestled in beautiful woodland acres.

Deer Mountain Inn is located north of Tannersville amongst the Catskill Mountains, about 15 minutes away from Hunter Mountain. The 168 acres the inn rests on carries an illustrious history. Apart from the history of Tannersville itself, the inn was once a summer cottage owned by the Colgate family, subsequently used as a summer retreat, children’s campground, and, it is rumored, owned as the property of Catskill early century gangster Jack “Leggs” Diamond. The property itself is wildly expansive: private trails lead throughout the surrounding woods, ranging from quiet walks to rigorous hikes, leading to autumnal wonder and swimming ponds.

After adventuring the grounds and soaking in the bounty of the Catskills, retreat back to the lodge for dinner at the Deer Mountain Inn’s restaurant. A glance at the menu is almost tougher than watching the Food Network on an empty stomach: Lambchops made with smoked burdock and chanterelle mushrooms, grilled skirt steak (my preferred steak) with carola potatoes and grilled scallions, magret duck breast with celery root puree and plum salad. That’s just to name the entrees, start the meal with fall squash soup or duck confit, finish it off with a flourless chocolate torte or crème brûlée. The best part is ingredients are locally sourced from a multitude of local farms and distributors. Scratch that, the best part is the long list of hand-crafted cocktails, wine and beer they offer.

As always, considering I’m forbidden to enter, you readers are the root of my envy. And, as always, don’t be afraid to invite me should you win. Again: the contest ends November 1st so enter your name, email and date of birth every day until then. The Hudson-Chatham tasting, tickets up Hunter Mountain, and lodgings at Deer Mountain Inn have to go to somebody – why not you?
