Quite possible the niftiest tool shed we’ve ever seen in midtown Kingston.

Can you imagine a working farm right in midtown Kingston, complete with a local farmstand that accepts SNAP benefits? That’s exactly what’s happening with a quarter-acre garden plot on the YMCA property in the heart of midtown, and with the help of an IndieGoGo campaign and other individual donations, the Kingston YMCA Farm Project hopes to expand this garden into a half-acre food farm worked by the hands of the kids participating in YMCA’s on-site after school and summer camp programs. An urban farm in Kingston is a splendid idea. See, the Broadway area of Kingston is what’s known as a “food desert”, an impoverished area woefully bereft of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other types of healthy foods. The Kingston YMCA Farm Project not only wants to grow food in the heart of the Ulster County city, but make that food accessible to those who live in midtown by establishing a farmstand open on Thursday events as well as a traveling farm stand that would bring that homegrown food right to the doors of those who need it, via bicycle. They plan to accept SNAP benefits, too. You can donate directly to the cause here on IndieGoGo, or you can come down to the Anchor at 744 Broadway, Kingston (GMAP) to the Farm Project’s Spring Celebration tonight, March 20th, starting at 6pm. There will be drink and food specials, a raffle, activities, and the chance to rub elbows with the folks making this urban farm dream possible. It’s a $10 suggested donation at the door (the money goes right to the Kingston YMCA Farm Project), but if you donate to the IndieGoGo campaign page, entry is free. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate the first day of spring and the vernal equinox than by helping a worthy cause intent on making homegrown fruits and veggies available to those who need it. See you tonight at the Anchor.
