Dreaming of Your Own Grape Arbor? Check Out this Hudson Valley Historic Farmhouse, $59,000
Kandy Harris | December 11, 2015Have you ever seen a house that immediately sets off your Spidey senses? This vintage on the Saugerties/Greene County line has been one such house for me. I drive by it every Friday afternoon on my way to Hudson, and I can’t help but find myself intrigued with it, feeling like there was something special behind the front door. Situated on a steep slope, the home’s windows face out toward the stoplight that sits right in front of it on Route 9W, giving me plenty of eyeballing time as I await the green light.
Turns out, it is a little bit of a treasure, historically-speaking. According to the listing, the property lines were hand-drawn and was once a farm back 1837 (although the listing states the house itself was built in 1780). The farm provided produce, so continues the listing, that was shipped on the nearby Hudson River to NYC. Cool story, but what of it these days? Some vintage details remain intact (ceiling beams, door handles, fireplaces, which do not work, etc.) but it definitely needs some fine-tuning (woo boy do those floors look cold). But the thing I’m digging is the fact that the sloped land is perfect for planting a grape arbor, just in case you’re dreaming of starting a mini-vineyard.
The two-acre parcel with seasonal Hudson River views comes with a handful of outbuildings including a barn, wash house, and a two-car garage.
4305 Route 9W, Saugerties (Grist Mill Realty)
