Eight Months Later: Early Craftsman Farmhouse near Woodstock’s Byrdcliffe Colony Now $549,000
Kandy Harris | November 30, 2015It’s only Monday, and we’ve already discovered enough Craftsman homes to fill two more weeks’ worth of posts. With so many, it’s hard to know where to begin. So, let’s start with the Catskills’ shining example of all that we love about the Arts & Crafts movement, the Byrdcliffe Colony. Located in Woodstock, Byrdcliffe started life as a small rural artists’ compound in the early 20th century and expanded to include 30 homesteads before its completion in 1903. If you’re a fan of Craftsman architecture, there’s no better place to observe these homes in their natural habitat than the Byrdcliffe colony.
This farmhouse is a gorgeous example of an early Craftsman house, and if you’re wondering why it looks familiar, we posted it exactly 8 months ago today. However, the price has dropped a dramatic $50,000 since then, so we think it’s worth a second look. And maybe a third and fourth because oh man, do we love this house. It was built in 1897, pretty early for an American Craftsman, but those no denying the signature elegance of its hand-made wood accents, window panes and doors (according to the listing, they were all custom-made), the kitchen cabinetry. Speaking of the kitchen, you’ll hear no complaints from us about the marble floors, Bertazzoni range, granite countertops, and custom cabinetry.
The 2000 sq. ft. 3 bed/2 bath house also includes a cedar Pergola, outside deck, and garden enclosure, all situated on 1.5 acres walking distance to both Woodstock village and the Byrdcliffe Colony. Is the artist life calling to you (minus the starvation and poverty)? Find your crafty inspiration in the heart of Woodstock, 2 hours from NYC.
