Enjoy All the Farm Vibes Without Much Work in Hughsonville, $699,900
Jane Anderson | April 8, 2022This renovated farmhouse has tranquil views, a convenient Dutchess County location, and a neat bonus:
An organic farm and brewery right next door.
Hughsonville, in the Dutchess County town of Wappinger, is a cute little hamlet on the Wappingers Creek adjacent to the up-and-coming village of Wappingers Falls. Sprinkled throughout the area are beautiful old homes, like this one (which has a Wappingers Falls mailing address). But unlike the others, this 1860s farmhouse sits on Obercreek Farm, a separately operated organic farming community that includes a farmstand and the Obercreek Brewing Company. Situated on an acre and a quarter of its own, the farmhouse has been modernized but still keeps some of its original flavor.
Whoever designed the renovations certainly thought of “a clean slate”—pretty much everything except the gorgeous hardwood floors is bathed in white. But check out that cool leaded-glass transom above the front door.
The original moldings, trim, and tall baseboards are still there, along with the traditional center-hall staircase.
The house measures 2,300 square feet. The formal living room has a gas fireplace and French doors that lead out to the wraparound porch. The dining room is set up much like the living room, with its own gas fireplace.
The kitchen is huge, with lots (and we mean lots) of white subway tile—and every convenience seems to have been met (but is that linoleum underfoot?). There are almost too many amenities here to describe: a SMEG 6-burner range and hood, Fisher Paykel fridge, La Cornue double porcelain sinks, a bonus large Houzer cast-iron second sink, granite countertops, track and under-counter lighting, and custom cabinets and shelving. The kitchen has its own mudroom entrance, with direct access to the driveway.
Check out that Avalon 60-bottle wine cooler, and the glass-door upper cabinets. The home also has a butler’s pantry with an original linen press. It leads into a full laundry room with a new washer/dryer and sink. From there, you can access a powder room and a separate door to the back porch.
Throughout the home, vintage touches like old doorknobs—and this massive armoire, with Narnia vibes—punch through the modern feel (and all that white paint).
The primary bedroom and two more bedrooms on the second floor all have original wide-plank floors and walk-in closets. A walk-up attic and full basement provide added room for your stuff.
The primary ensuite sports a soaking tub and a glass-walled shower. Both the primary bath and the second full bath upstairs are slicked with that white subway tile (maybe ’cause it’s easy to clean? I dunno).
Since the property abuts Obercreek Farm, you’re guaranteed tranquil views in all seasons. Can’t you just picture yourself sipping an Obercreek brew on this porch? And it’s just a quarter-mile from the New Hamburg Metro-North station, and close to Bowdoin Park and the Greenway hiking trails.
