Fix-It-Up Friday: A Haines Falls Home Close to Kaaterskill Falls for $249K
Jane Anderson | November 24, 2023Welcome to Fix-It-Up Friday! What better way to work off those turkey-day calories than fixing up a fixer-upper? Upstater is featuring a great one today in Haines Falls, a hamlet of the town of Hunter.
The 1,050-square-foot house was built in the 1870s; its provenance includes ties to the hamlet’s namesake family. Today, though, it is in need of much TLC. The exterior’s green siding is stained and worn, and the front porch’s white clapboards seem to want to catch up to the rest of the exterior by taking on green stains themselves.
The interior needs work, but old-home buffs will recognize vintage details throughout—starting with the front door’s glasswork. The living room’s hardwood floor needs a deep refinish.
Well, we’re loving that fridge. But the rest of the kitchen—besides a three-year-old electric range—appears to need an overhaul.
Twin built-in corner hutches and a vintage pendant lamp add charm to the dusty-blue dining room.
This room has a rustic, knotty pine accent wall and a set of shelves. But it, too, would need quite a bit of elbow grease.
Now this bathroom is not for the faint of heart, but with some touchups, it could actually work for the right owner. That starry, black-and-white tile might need some getting used to, but again, it could be a good fit if the newbies have a quirky side. We’re loving those glass doorknobs and the marble hex tile in the floor. The chandelier and the built-in shelves with a scallop border are funky, in a good way, too.
The next owner would also need to love swirly ceiling treatments, or be prepared for some serious scraping in this bedroom. The house has a total of three bedrooms.
*scrape, scrape, scrape*
The property measures about a half-acre, including this chair-like stone barbecue. If we owned this, we’d go the extra mile and refinish those vintage lawn chairs, for sure.
The back of the house has a walkout basement, and the roof is less than 10 years old—so the house does have a lot going for it. It’s just three minutes to the breathtaking Kaaterskill Falls, and about 10 minutes to Hunter Mountain.
