Former Church in Tuxedo’s Southfields: This place is ready for your imagination.

Today’s Upstater pick is a former church in the Tuxedo hamlet of Southfields.

Known more for its defunct Borscht-Belt-era rest stop, the Red Apple Rest, Southfields is a place to breeze through on the way to Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. But this former church is a must-see for someone who’s willing to put in some elbow grease and a hefty dose of imagination.

The exterior is, well, churchy, with a stone foundation, white-railinged porch, and red siding. No windows? At least, none we can see from the front.

Wowza, there they are. Stained glass is iconic to many houses of worship, and this one is no exception. The former sanctuary is now a great room, with a grand piano in one corner and a 16-seat dining table front and center. The floor is carpeted: Blue for most of the space, and green for the platform that once housed the altar.

Here’s a piano’s-eye view. The ceiling bears faded reminiscences of decoration among its chandeliers.

That massive television and fireplace would appear almost blasphemous to the less-secular eye. Like we said, the new owner would need to bring imagination to revamp the entire space.

But hey, this huge kitchen is a comfort. The flooring is a mix of woods, but the granite counters on the wooden cabinets look to be in good shape. In any case, there’s a ton of room to renovate.

Gentle reminder: If the new owner decides to demo this room, they should consider donating usable pieces to their local ReStore. Bigger pieces that are in the home are negotiable for purchase, according to the listing. We imagine that may include the piano and dining set from the great room.

That professional gas range is something we’d like to get our hands on, too.

We suppose this property could be reused as a community space, although its currently zoned for single-family use. But admit it: Wouldn’t you like to take a stab at living here?

It’s even got an updated half-bath—and a full bath somewhere else, the listing infers.

It’s certainly got potential. Plus, it’s just over two miles from a delectable breakfast at Dottie Audrey’s Bakery Kitchen.

And at a listing price of $350,000, for 2,100 square feet of house and 2.8 acres of (rocky, hilly) land, we bet this property will be snapped up soon.
