Give This Callicoon Center Craftsman a New Lease on Life: $95K

This Five-Figure Friday home in Callicoon Center, Sullivan County, would be better called the “Fits and Starts Friday” home: It looks like some work was begun, then given up on.

The front of the house obviously shows that a lot of work is needed. But it’s got good Craftsman-style bones, like the brick columns on the porch.

It’s got cute fish-scale siding above terribly worn clapboards that we’re not sure are salvageable. The bay window, though, has a nice scalloped treatment on the bottom.

Inside the 1,588-square-foot house, you’ll find patched walls ready to be finished alongside a sadly worn-out wood floor. The piano-shaped ceiling treatment above a fireplace in the living room shows that someone had a clever idea that just never was brought to fruition.

And then there are ideas that make you scratch your head and say, “Why?” Case in point: This kinda cockeyed chandelier in the kitchen.

The floor here is a mess, too.

This bathroom (there are two in the house) has had a patching job begun, too, but left uncompleted.

The corner shower area looks barely large enough for a human.

Here’s evidence of good bones: Plaster and lathe woodwork in the walls.

The staircase has solid-looking rails and banisters. And the upstairs hall is bright and sunny. The listing says there are five bedrooms in the house.

There’s a detached garage that, alas, also needs serious repair.

We’re not sure if all of this will be cleaned out before closing (we’d wager it wouldn’t be).

A ladder at the other end of the garage leads up…

…to a partially kinda-finished second-story space.

The back of the house shows a greenhouse-like sunroom on one side and water-damaged siding on the other. The metal roof looks new, though.

The house is on about a quarter-acre of property. It’s across the street from the Callicoon Center bandstand, so the new owners won’t be at a loss for entertainment when the weather warms. Callicoon isn’t a hustle-and-bustle place, but that’s part of its charm. It’s about 10 minutes to Peck’s Market in Jeffersonville for groceries, and under a half-hour to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.
