Gothic Gingerbread House, Part II: Dutchess County Edition

  |  December 25, 2018

Barrytown, NY is where we found this c.1880s Gothic Revival with original details around every corner…

We took a holiday-themed detour of Real Life Gingerbread Houses earlier with a Germantown Gothic Victorian. And, we’re continuing the Gingerbread theme with this Gothic farmhouse in Barrytown, a small hamlet just east of Red Hook in northern Dutchess County. From the front door, the Hudson River is just a short walk away.

The exterior of this 4,450-square foot house is a bevy of fancy wood scroll work, wood window shutters, hexagonal shingle siding, and ornate trim. You can almost imagine that it’s white icing piped onto a gingerbread cookie house…

The interior features bay windows, hardwood floors, incised wood trim, soaring ceilings, and a grand total of seven alabaster and stone fireplaces.

A large living room, library with built-ins, formal dining room, and spacious kitchen in need of a remodel make of the first floor of this five-bedroom, four-bath home. Imagine how this interior would look decked out in twinkly holiday finery…

Take the original carved-wood staircase up to the second floor with four bedrooms (three come with fireplaces), as well as three full baths. This house could use some cosmetic updates here and there, but this is a sweet, gracious house that looks to be in good condition.

Even the attic has been finished and transformed into a usable space with five room and two baths.

Still not enough space for you? The house is connected by breezeway to an additional studio, and the matching Gothic carriage house barn offers both workshop and loft.
