Historic Bungalow Craftsman in Hudson’s First Subdivision, $525,000
Kandy Harris | December 1, 2015Like your American Craftsman Bungalows with a side of historic significance? This one was built in 1917 as part of the Rossman Estate, established in 1874 after the construction of a reservoir in the Columbia County city of Hudson just over Prospect Hill. When Rossman’s property became an aqueduct, he carved up the remaining land into 13 residential lots, thereby sealing Rossman Avenue’s spot in history as the city’s first planned residential subdivision. Rossman-Prospect Avenue is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It’s a small residential subdivision, and the Craftsman takes up for 1/10th of an acre. But what we find so intriguing about this Craftsman is that it pulls elements from Greek Revival, a style that exists within the same realm of fanciness as Victorian, in direct opposition with the whole Craftsman philosophy. Long story short, attractive stylistic juxtapositions galore, people! Wheeeee!
While a half-a-mill is encroaching on luxury status even for Hudson (and this is NOT bustling Warren Street, but rather the very south end of Warren as you’re heading out of the city proper), we can’t help but ‘ooo’ and ‘aaah’ over both design and decor of the 2000 sq. ft. bungalow, all the way out to the shaded garden courtyard where a mint julep will surely appear as soon as the weather tips above 80 degrees F.
Located 1.5 miles from the Hudson Amtrak station on the waterfront and approx. 2 hours from NYC.
