Historic Victorian in Poughkeepsie: $735K

  |  January 30, 2025

Poughkeepsie’s architecture is diverse; the Academy Street neighborhood, though, is the place to be for old-home buffs.

This historic Victorian in Poughkeepsie is on the National Register of Historic Places. Flanked by equally intricate homes, this three-story has a green exterior with a wraparound side porch and an interesting, tricornered dormer up top.

Departing from the traditional gray tones, the porch floor is a vibrant salmon color. There’s plenty of room here for afternoon tea and a game of Bunco.

The sideswept stairway is a surprising departure from traditional, center-hall stairs. The white-and-wood steps hug a bench at floor level before curving upstairs. The foyer itself is wide and roomy, with an old-fashioned radiator and beautiful hardwood flooring.

Fancy molding decorates the ceiling and runs its perimeter in the living room. A marble fireplace is a gorgeous accent. The dining room can be seen through the doorway.

A big-windowed sunroom catches the opposite view of the dining room and another fireplace.

The kitchen is chock-full of curvy, furniture-quality accents like a stocky, butcher-block island that sits opposite a fabulous, red-enameled, Aga-style gas range. The range has its own, heavily decorated niche. The rest of the kitchen has white cabinetry and dark granite countertops.

It’s big enough for a dinette, and is beautifully lit with pendant lights.

The main floor has two half-baths. This one, in white, is ready for the next owner’s decorative touch.

Head up those pretty stairs in the foyer to the second floor.

The second and third floors hold a total of five bedrooms and three full baths. This bedroom has a woodburning fireplace and wall-to-wall gray carpeting.

Red-toile wallpaper covers the walls above white wainscoting in this big bathroom. A clawfoot tub and a separate, brass-accented shower stall are all set for relaxation.

A second-floor laundry room is a modern bonus.

A brick-lined fireplace adds warmth and ambiance to this wood-floored bedroom.

Vibrant cobalt-blue tile covers the walls in this bathroom. Matching tile accents the floor and chair rail. A clawfoot slipper tub and pedestal sink are like frosting on a cake.

Neutral walls and white trim complement a hardwood floor that just glows in this bedroom.

With five bedrooms, there’s room for a crowd.

The third bath has a clawfoot tub like the other two.

The top floor was finished from the attic; the three-windowed dormer doesn’t appear in earlier pictures of the house. But wow, this office is gorgeous, from the built-in shelves to the skylight-soaked floors.

The house is on a third of an acre. The back yard is bisected by a stone pathway…

…leading to a detached, three-car garage.

This photo shows the house as it appeared closer to its c. 1859 construction. It’s close to shopping and eateries: Hudson & Packard is a half-mile away for pizza, salads, and wings.
