House Crush of the Week: Saugerties Surprise, $405,000
Kandy Harris | August 14, 2015I know what you’re thinking because I thought the same thing: “Yeah, whatever. Semi-triangular contemporary. NEXT.” But no. Oh no. I went in for a closer look, and voila…
WHAT. All Shire jokes aside (the listing already covers that), this earth-shelter looks like something Baggins and the gang would build if they had a penchant for muted wood tones and Stickley furniture. And I love it!
And look, this deer loves it, too. It’s an all-you-can-eat buffet on the roof, after all. So why build your house into the earth? We’re imagining that it must keep things cool in the summer and warm in the winter without having to use A/C or run the heat. And the listing says it’s been built with green materials. The construction under all that dirt is a dome with plastered walls and radiant heat flooring, but I long to see more of the interior. Outside, mountain views and plenty of land. Not including the land that makes up the back of the house. It’s even built around a tree!
