Since we last looked at this Kingston Gothic church, it’s experienced a conversion worthy of Paul the Apostle on the Road to Damascus.

Over the course of its 136-year lifespan, this c.1884 church in downtown Kingston, NY has served as a house of worship and, later, a weaving factory. It’s a private residence these days, thanks to an extensive and jaw-dropping renovation, but its most striking features remain: Cathedral ceilings, exposed stone and brick, and, of course, glorious stained glass windows.

This week on Upstater, we find ourselves besotted with stained glass, and the Hudson Valley/Catskills real estate listings do not disappoint in that department. Need a stained glass fix, too? Stay with Upstater all week long for more homes with stained glass windows, on-the-market, starting with what has got to be one of the coolest homes in all of Kingston, NY.

The 7,000-square-foot church overlooks the Rondout Creek just minutes from Kingston’s East Strand neighborhood, but you might find yourself more distracted by the views on the inside, with hardwood floors throughout, sky-high ceilings, and a dramatic mix of both antique and modern details…

…like the kitchen, for example, situated at one end of the home’s great room. It’s been outfitted with high-end fixtures like and an eight-burner Viking stove, Sub-Zero fridge, and marble counter tops. In the midst of all of this cutting-edge cooking goodness is a little reminder from the past: A stained glass window about the prep sink.

More reminders of the past include the industrial sliding doors – a solid nod to the Rondout Creek’s industrial past – that close off the master bedroom. And, solid timber supports dating back to the church’s build date offer a reminder that this church was constructed to last many years and iterations.

Other new additions include electric, heat, windows, plumbing, metal roof, and custom copper gutters…

…all of which sits on a quarter-acre lot minutes away from downtown Kingston’s restaurants, shops, marina, parks, and walking trails, less than two hours north of NYC.
