Heading West for a Five-Figure Mansion in Elmira, NY

mansard castle

Here’s a rarity: A ten-bedroom, 8,284-square-foot mansard castle priced to move, sitting in the middle of a town in the Finger Lakes.

Every time Five-Figure Friday rolls around, we feel lucky if we can manage to find fixer-upper shack in the Hudson Valley or Catskills, much less a property that’s turn-key. Imagine our delight when we heard about this c.1876 Empire Victorian listed for less than $100K. Granted, we had to travel to the Finger Lakes to find it, but it was well worth the journey.

If you’re were hoping for a turn-key castle for $99K, sorry to disappoint you. You can’t have it both ways at that price, but the interior still possesses a hint or three of that nineteenth-century grandeur, like the stained glass double front doors, main staircase, and multiple carved fireplaces.

Many of the rooms still have their original details, but there’s work to be done to make it habitable…

…and others already gutted and ready for dry-wall hanging. There are some newer features, however, like the rubber roof, electric, and energy-efficient boilers.

One of our favorite features is the roof-top copula, with windows wrapping all the way around for 360-degree views of the city of Elmira.
