In case you missed it, which wouldn’t be surprising given the announcement’s near-total lack of fanfare, Governor Cuomo signed a law on Saturday making medicinal marijuana legal in New York. This legalization, however, doesn’t come without a number of restrictions. First and foremost, recipients of medical marijuana will not be allowed to smoke it; it will be available in vapor or oil form. Additionally, only doctors who have been provided training and certification by the state will be allowed to prescribe it, and those who get prescriptions will have to certify with the state and will be able to get the drug from only a handful of approved dispensaries. The law will take about 18 months to go into effect and will be available to those who suffer from cancer, AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and Lou Gehrig’s Disease, as well as some spinal cord injuries. Gov. Cuomo will be doing the ceremonial signing at some point today at the New York Academy of Medicine. Here’s more from the NY Daily News article.
