Midcentury Modern Bungalow in Kingston

  |  September 29, 2025

Upstater is in Kingston this week. The Hudson Riverfront city is not only the seat of Ulster County government; it also is rich in state history, dating to the Revolution and earlier.

Today’s pick is near the historic Uptown Stockade District. It’s a colorful Midcentury Modern bungalow that’s been carefully brightened up like a polished gem. A natural-wood picket fence encloses the front yard.

Inside is an expanse of new, woodtone flooring in a light color that brightens the living room. A gas “woodstove” adds warmth and ambience.

The picture window out front pours light into the living/dining/kitchen areas.

The key to a great home, no matter if it’s big or small, is attention to detail. Here, the house measures just 992 square feet, but the finishes are exquisite, from granite counters to substantial, stainless-steel appliances in the kitchen. A big center island has a sink cut into an expanse of granite that also overhangs into a breakfast bar. A washing machine is tucked into the unseen corner of the island—see more in the 3D virtual online tour.

This is a side entry as well as a hall between the kitchen and primary bedroom. Rich use of color adds drama to the smaller space.

The same goes for the bathroom. Although petite for sure, its tall wainscoting topped with moody lavender walls definitely makes a statement. And check out the pedestal sink and standalone tub.

A bonus of working with a smaller footprint means you can add high-end touches without breaking the bank. Case in point: The wood-planked cathedral ceiling in the primary bedroom, which perfectly improves the spaciousness here.

Bonus: A walk-in closet.

The second bedroom is large enough for an easy chair in addition to the bed. Another pro decorating tip we see throughout this house is the use of handcrafted crochet, which adds a homey warmth.

This flexible space off the second bedroom is currently an office, but could easily become a guest room or nursery.

The exterior is full of fun spaces, like this cozy nook at the side entrance.

A deck has just enough room for a lacy iron dinette.

The house sits on a tenth of an acre, an average city parcel, and it’s got a good share of pretty landscape elements like a walking path and perennial plantings in the backyard.

A one-car garage is hugely welcome.

And the front yard has surprising spaces for relaxation and play. A stone patio sits under a graceful Japanese maple, next to a truly peaceful, sculptural fence. A stone-lined mulch path is both aesthetically pleasing and reduces the amount of lawn that needs to be mowed.

The house is under a mile from the center of the Stockade District and an Italian meal at Lola. It’s listed for $449,900.
