Midcentury Modern Two-Story in Suffern: $999K

  |  December 2, 2024

The temps have sunk to freezing in no time flat. So this week, we’re celebrating homes with indoor space to get our “ya-yas” out—a rec room, massive square footage, or both.

Today, Upstater is in Suffern at a Midcentury Modern jewel by architect Murray Blatt. The c.1963 two-story has five bedrooms within 3,200 square feet. The exterior has chalet-esque lines and a row of skinny windows tucked into the first-floor brick wall.

Big double doors welcome visitors from a brick entryway. Board-and-batten siding is an original touch, too.

Marble-tile flooring contrasts with the wood interior. There’s more board-and-batten in the foyer, along with open stairs to the next floor.

Emphasis is on the horizontal and vertical here.

Hefty ceiling beams criss-cross the living room.

A wide bluestone ledge supports the firebox within a long, floor-to-ceiling fireplace. Across from it (behind the curvy velvet couch) is a built-in sofa topped with white leather.

That fireplace is double-sided, with the other side facing the dining room.

The kitchen was brought into modern times, a benefit for the new owner. Brass-handled, white cabinetry is snappy and elegant, topped with marbled granite counters. Stainless-steel appliances include double wall ovens and a dishwasher…

…as well as a side-by-side fridge. We love the Lucite chairs in the breakfast nook.

Clerestory windows let in light.

Skylights in the first-floor rec room pour in sunlight.

This family room has that burnished board-and-batten as well as a plethora of windows.

A first-floor bedroom is welcome.

The ensuite bath is awash in marble, from the walls to the floor. An oversized, walk-in shower is encased in white subway tile.

Four more bedrooms are upstairs. This one’s big enough for a crib…

…and a couple of beds.

Angled ceilings, ceiling beams, and big windows are nice touches.

This bathroom mimics the layout (if not the decor) of the first-floor bath.

The final bedroom has a door that leads to one of two second-story porches.

This deep, covered porch sits above the attached, two-car garage.

With the requisite 60s-era green felt carpeting and railings that may not pass today’s safety muster, this outdoor space is still a welcome respite on a hot day.

Situated on 0.84 acre, northeast of Suffern’s village center, this MidMod masterpiece is more “Pomona” (car-dependent suburb) than “Suffern” (walkable village). Still, it’s just about a mile to minor-league baseball with the New York Boulders.

A dramatic diamond-esque window array marks the upper back of the house (that bedroom door and accompanying porch are just below it).
