Mindfulness Tourism in Woodstock

Karma Triyana Dharmachakra, Woodstock

While 2013 might be considered the year of the “staycation”, perhaps 2014 will usher in the year of “mindfulness tourism”. We can’t take credit for the name: The Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Woodstock used it when they let us know about an upcoming retreat May 2-4 called Weekend in a Buddhist Monastery. Take heed: You won’t be wandering around in a terry cloth robe, enjoy a soothing facial followed by a restorative yoga class. It’s not that kind of retreat. During the weekend, participants take classes, practice meditation, eat vegetarian, and help with chores. You’ll spend time without distractions up on Meads Mountain. The goal is to contemplate, not luxuriate. But it’s not all sitting in lotus; retreaters can also walk the Overlook Mountain trail (go all the way up the fire tower for the stunning view) and explore the grounds of the monastery. The weekend is $65, not too shabby for a trip inside potentially undiscovered territory: Yourself. Check out the monastery’s website for more info. What do you think about the concept of “mindful tourism”? Think it will catch on?
