No Love for Poughkeepsie

Poughkeepsie

Poor Poughkeepsie, the Hudson Valley’s second most misunderstood little city (we argue that Newburgh takes the top spot there). Once again, the Dutchess County spot is getting knocked around a bit, this time by the website Cities Journal in their list “Top 15 Cities You Should Move Away From”. Let’s ignore the atrocious grammar usage in the title and take a look at the list itself, which hits all the usual suspects: Lots of places in New Jersey, the east coast’s easiest target, as well as Cleveland, Milwaukee, and East L.A. Citing Poughkeepsie’s high property taxes, lousy weather, and bad traffic, Cities Journal also lists Buffalo as a city to leave ASAP. Sorry, Cities Journal, but the taxes are high nearly everywhere in the Hudson Valley, and we’ve experienced exactly one traffic back-up headed from the Mid-Hudson Bridge to the train station, a route we drive several times a month. As for the weather, it’s the same weather that’s over Rhinebeck, Millerton, Red Hook, and other much more beloved towns. Furthermore, we love some of the old architecture in quirky Poughkeepsie. While some parts are better than others (the strip malls are horrendous), Poughkeepsie deserves a little more love than than sites like Cities Journal give it. What are your thoughts on P-Town? Underrated, or a place to avoid? While you’re mulling it over, take a gander at some of our favorite buildings in town after the jump.
