Once a Church, Now a Home in Saugerties: A light-filled, sacred space.

  |  April 5, 2025

This magical space in Saugerties is a stunning mix of history and modern details that soothes the creative soul.

Built in 1883 as a church, this home has four bedrooms plus an accessory two-bedroom, one-bath house. Here’s the (former) church, here’s the steeple…

…Open the doors…

…and see all the people beautiful, elegant space. This foyer, just past the heavily paneled front doors and before the glass interior doors, is big enough to couch a sturdy bench.

The deep, dark, smoky blue-black walls from the foyer continue into the former sanctuary, now a light-filled living space. White wainscoting ups the brightness.

Yes, a basketball court is part of the space, too.

There’s a Zen space for relaxation when that basketball is not bouncing.

Fully outfitted for modern life, the house includes sleek hardwood flooring and a home-office space next to the stairs.

Sliding glass doors on the living-room end of the main floor lead outside.

A breakfast room brings in a monastic ethos that’s simple but stunning.

The aforementioned living room has a freestanding, cast-iron woodburning stove. Clever built-in spaces under the stairs answer questions for storage and “Where do we put the TV?”

The kitchen has a farm sink, white cabinetry, and butcher-block countertops.

A center island has seating for three.

A full bath has a platform tub and a plant-loving ledge.

Remnants of the home’s former iteration include a peek of stained glass on window peaks, and a carved ceiling beam in a bedroom.

We’d add a safety gate to that casement window, but otherwise, this room is perfect for a little one.

The color schemes here are peaceful.

And then, there’s this bathroom. Oxblood tile runs rampant here, soaking the room in dramatic shades.

Cross this little bridge from the house to a stone-lined walkway…

…up to the former rectory.

It’s modern and bright. Iron pipe railings line the stairwell off the living room; cabinets in the same shade back up to a wall in the kitchen, which also is home to stacked laundry machines.

The bathroom has a floating vanity topped with butcher block and a vessel sink; the shower walls are white subway tile.

A skylight pours sunshine down into this minimalist bedroom, which has bleached-pine flooring.

A smaller bedroom has a woodsy view from a wall of windows.

There are three and a third acres to explore.

What a peaceful place to nap. And when your body calls for something more energetic, it’s not a far drive to hiking at Overlook Mountain; skiing at Hunter Mountain; shopping in Kingston; or enjoying the vibes of Woodstock. It’s listed for $1,375,000.
