pine plains island

You read that right. This Pine Plains island is an entity unto itself, so if you like to remain mysterious inaccessible, welcome home…

This week on Upstater, we’ve been celebrating stylish, small spaces around the Hudson Valley and Catskills, so imagine our delight when we found a 2.6-acre island on-the-market, situated in Twin Islands Lake in northern Dutchess County. Yep, the whole island is for sale, as is the one-bedroom cottage situated upon it.

The cottage is brand-new and sunlight-filled with hardwood floors and a huge bedroom. What it doesn’t have, however, is a kitchen. It’s plumbed and ready to go, but you’ll have to install your own. Also includes a well, septic, electric, heat, and, according to the listing, “an imminent Certificate of Occupancy.” Move-in ready? Not quite yet.

The property also comes with a boathouse/studio/workshop located on the nearby shore, about 350 feet across the lake from the island.

We’re sure you have many questions, and a few we can answer. First of all, yes, you will need to access this island via boat. There’s no road, driveway, or bridge. The shoreline boathouse/workshop,  though, does include a kayak, canoe, and an electric pontoon for transfer of people and supplies. And, during the winter, you can ice skate across the lake to the mainland!

The mainland, in this case, is the charming hamlet of Pine Plains, where you can grab supplies or hit the local shops and eateries for a little social interaction. Pine Plains is about 20 minutes east of Rhinebeck village and about 10 minutes from the nearest Taconic State Parkway exit. NYC is about two hours away. Meanwhile, who cares? You live on a private island now.
