Some renovations need a serious miracle. This Putnam Valley church, however, is ready for you to move in and work on at your own pace.
Hallelujah! Upstater is in Putnam County, NY today, and we’re going to church. The former Oregon Methodist Church, to be exact, situated in the hamlet of Lake Peekskill, about a mile outside of Putnam Valley.
Dating back to the turn-of-the-century, the Victorian chapel – with a mansard roof and bell tower still intact – offers three levels within its 2,720 square feet, but we’re starting on the second floor with the former main sanctuary, lined with dramatic stained glass windows. Skylights bring in unfettered sunlight, and the wood floors are ready for a finish.
Even the full bath comes with stained glass!
Down on at ground level, things get less liturgical and more residential with an open great-room that includes a wood stove. The large kitchen’s been outfitted with a commercial range…
…and, up on the third floor are the church’s three bedrooms, accessed by an upstairs landing in need of a new paint job.
The bedrooms look huge, with closet space and new double-hung windows installed, as well as redone wood floors…
…but, the pièce de résistance is the expansive back deck, canopied by trees, overlooking the Peekskill Hollow Creek. Do we dare call it…heavenly?
