Rental of the Week: Cotton House, Saugerties

  |  February 7, 2012

Word of this house got to our inbox via new readers, a New Yorker couple who bought a weekend fixer-upper, transformed it, and now rent it out to help cover the mortgage costs. (You can see some of the before photos here.) They call it the Cotton House.

We wish we’d discovered this Rental of the Week about a month ago, when some couples start scheming for Valentine’s Day. And since Valentine’s Day falls on a weekday this year, that means making your plans for either the weekend before or after.  This is a great upstate New York romantic get-away.  The interior is bright, airy and roomy.  The rooms are lovely and tastefully decorated.  The kitchen has everything you need to make a intimate dinner for two (bring your own food).  And while you dine, you can take in a stunning sunset.  Or you can snuggle in front of the living room fire place.

The Cotton House isn’t just for couples seeking seclusion.  In the summer, bring the rest of the family or a few of your friends, and there’s plenty of room.  The house offers  four bedrooms and two full baths.  Have BBQs on the patio (gas grill included).  Sip cocktails on the deck.  Languish in the hammock.

The Cotton House is seven miles from the village of Saugerties, which is close to some great restaurants and shops…and chocolate.  Really good chocolate.  Lucky Chocolates on Partition Street in the village has organic, hand-crafted confections, as well as gluten-free pastries, soups and juices.  Next door is one of our favorite wine shops, Partition Street Wine Shop, where Jordan or Suzanne will pick out the perfect champagne for you.  Or you can pack up your chocolate and bubbly and hike the trail to Saugerties Lighthouse on the Hudson River to have a picnic.

Expect to book far ahead, as their calendar fills up quickly.  Weekends in the summer are particularly busy. Rates are $225/weekend night or $175/weekday night, two night minimum.  And if you discover you want to shut the world out for a while longer, the Cotton House goes for $4000/month.
