Rondout District Victorian: $675K

There’s a reason Victorian style is so popular. Whether it’s the curb appeal, fancy details, or history, this period of home construction abides.

Today, Upstater is in Kingston, at a Rondout District Victorian. The exterior is brick for the first two stories, with fanciful shingles on the third level.

It’s a city lot, so there’s just a quarter-acre of property. But this view off the porch shows a sweet little yard.

Intricate details abound, from the vintage planked porch ceiling to the beautifully original front door.

Masterful woodworking envelops the stairway, too. It’s not often we see glass-doored cupboards in a staircase.

Old-home lovers may mourn the modernity of the home’s kitchen. They might be consoled by the bay window with leaded glass on top.

To be honest, a newer, fully functional kitchen is a bonus in everyday life. Stainless steel appliances and a quartz-topped center island are appreciated, for sure. The light wood cabinets are a strong contrast to the dark woodtones throughout the rest of the house.

This room has a fireplace and a windowed nook with leaded glass and lacy fretwork.

A side staircase reflects the original craftsmanship.

This room, too, retains the home’s original beauty in a bowed alcove and more leaded and stained glass.

Upstairs, a laundry room is a handy bonus.

The full bath upstairs has a wide, single-sink vanity in blue and white.

A jetted tub sits within a black-and-white-tiled nook, with built-in cupboards on one side.

Sunlight seems to love older homes; we love the warm glow on this hardwood floor. The new owner could try to renew that glow in the trim, too, though it would take a lot of paint-stripping. There are a total of three bedrooms.

Triple Gothic-influenced windows pour light into the unfinished attic.

The full basement is unfinished, with a warren of rooms.

The yard has this cute firepit area, and a shed for storage.

It’s close to the confluence of the Rondout Creek and the Hudson River, and a block away from Kingston Point Park and the Kingston Point Rail Trail. And it’s a half-mile from the riverfront Hutton Brickyards.
