Saugerties Farmers Market (Still) Up and Running
Alia | September 4, 2011We visited the lovely Saugerties Farmers Market yesterday. According to market organizers, the majority of farmers and vendors were hard hit by Hurricane Irene, losing crops and livestock to flooding, but when asked if they should cancel Saturday’s farmers market, they adamantly said no.
There were still plenty of delicious things on offer, from fresh summer tomatoes and produce to pasture-raised meats to homemade Jamaican food. This farmers market is particular fun for kids (and animal loving grown-ups) as there’s also a petting zoo as well as face-painting and tractor rides.
Market organizers made a point of stating that it’s particularly important to support Upstate farmers in the coming seasons. Many have suffered substantial losses thanks to Hurricane Irene, so remember to buy local when you can.
