Take Your Pick of the Hudson Valley’s Peaches a-Plenty

  |  July 25, 2017

We have it on good authority that peaches in the Hudson Valley are going crazy this season, unlike last season’s less-than-stellar crop (blame 2016’s wonky weather).

Once the height of peach season hits around late July/early August, you could hit the local farmers markets and stock up to quell your peach craving (peach ice cream, anyone? Peaches on the grill? I can attest that they are delicious, especially with brown sugar and vanilla ice cream. You should also preserve them if you plan to get peaches in bulk). Or, you could roll up your sleeves and engage in a beloved Hudson Valley/Catskills summer tradition: Pick-Your-Own fruit from a local orchard.

But where to go? Here’s a short list of our favorite pick-your-own orchards and farms in the Hudson Valley.

Greig Farm, Red Hook, Dutchess County: Pick berries and fruit, then stop by the Hudson Valley Farmers Market for good coffee and a duck egg omelet. 227 Pitcher Lane, Red Hook.

Dubois Farms, Highland, Ulster County: Located in the heart of Hudson Valley wine country, so feel free to combine that with your peach-picking. 209 Perkinsville Road, Highland.

Kelder’s Farm, Accord, Ulster County: This is the pick-your-own orchard/farmers market for kids. Come say “hi” to Gnome Chomsky. 5755 US-209, Kerhonkson.

Fishkill Farms, Fishkill, Dutchess County: Stay within 90 minutes of the city for your peach picking trip. Visit during the farms’ Peachtopia on August 12th. 9 Fishkill Farm Road, Hopewell Junction.
