Peekamoose Blue Hole

The Peekamoose Blue Hole (depicted above and below) in the tiny Catskill hamlet of Sundown gets a ton of press as one of the best swimming holes in the country. Adventure Journal and Travel + Leisure (not to mention scores of local publications) have named Peekamoose Blue Hole as a must-swim destination, placing it in the same company as pristine pools in California and Hawaii. We’ve been, and it’s definitely one of the largest and deepest we’ve frequented over the years, but it gets mighty crowded even on weekdays. Luckily, it’s not the only place to swim, and while we’re sworn to secrecy on where some of these are located, we will post a link here to SwimmingHoles.org, and with a little digging, you’ll find them. Got some great swimming hole shots? Take a moment to upload them to the Upstater Flickr pool.

Saugerties Beach. Not a swimming hole, but certainly worth a splash or two.
