The Former Home of Marc Chagall in High Falls: $310K

  |  April 12, 2023

Today’s Upstater house pick has a familiar address—it’s next door to the former studio of Marc Chagall that we featured last week. In fact, this is the former home of the artist.

The three-bedroom, one-bath, Cape-Cod-style home was built in 1900, about 40 years before Chagall took up residence here.

The front porch is a bit messy, but it’s got a wood floor. Huge rhododendron bushes flank the front steps and offer privacy from the front.

Whoever lives here now certainly loves their houseplants. The living room has a dark wood floor; a rich-toned, wood-and-brick fireplace is against one wall, between two windows.

The dining room also has a wood floor and neutral-colored walls. A window is bumped into a nook, and another window on the adjacent wall lets light pour in.

The kitchen is L-shaped, and needs quite a bit of updating. The faux butcher-block counter is chipped, and the salmon paint color could use an upgrade.

A door from the kitchen leads to a small mudroom…

…that has another door…

…leading to the covered back patio.

The first floor has a bedroom, albeit a small one.

The staircase appears original to the house. It’s painted brown and white, with straight spindles that echo the Arts and Crafts esthetic of the one in the studio.

The single bathroom in the house is upstairs. It’s got a tub/shower combination and a somewhat outdated vanity. The floor tile would probably need an upgrade, too.

The two bedrooms upstairs are in need of quite a bit of work. This one has tongue-and-groove walls and a painted wood floor. The storage closet looks roomy but needs new doors.

The wood floor in this bedroom definitely needs to be refinished. But that alcove in the back is bright; we’d continue the white paint throughout the room, given the chance.

The house sits on a 0.67-acre lot, with a gravel/dirt driveway leading to a detached, two-car garage.
