The Troll House – A Beautiful, Below-the-Bridge Home in Kingston

  |  October 3, 2025

Upstater is on Abeel Street in Kingston today, at a gorgeously appointed home that glows inside and out.

Built in 1880, it retains vintage details like a rubble foundation and brick lower facade. Metal roofs cover the top floor and the lower patio. The home’s nickname is the Troll House…

…because it sits under the Kingston/Rhinecliff Bridge. Those red doors are where we are entering today.

According to the listing, the home’s interior was designed by previous owners who were a plumber and interior designer. Both influences are apparent in the carefully chromatic use of green and in the patinaed copper-pipe stair rail. Variegated hardwood flooring is a beauty spot, too.

Butcher-block counters enhance green cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances, and fishscale-tiled backsplashes.

The curvy center island is artwork in itself, with dentil molding and handy storage, too.

Four big windows fill one wall.

Details abound here, like this impressive wallpaper that echoes the essence of the outdoors.

Head upstairs to find a stunning cathedral-style stained-glass window and beautifully painted walls.

The house has just one bedroom (technically), but it’s a beaut.

So is this ensuite bath, with marble accents, a separate shower, and a soaking tub.

The lower level has hexagonal marble floor tile and deeply grained wood paneling. The large room could be a living room, office, or even a guest room in a pinch.

The half-bath down here has marble tiles magnificently set in a chevron pattern. That marble corner sink is lovely, too.

See what we meant by those wood-paneled walls? The effect is very cigar-smoke-and-bourbon, in our opinion. The door outside leads to the front covered patio.

Out back is another stone patio, with steps leading up to a terrace level.

The house faces the Rondout Creek and a marina where you can stash a boat or kayak. And it’s just steps away from the Blackbird Infoshop
(self-described as an “Anarchist Autonomous Space, Vegan Cafe, and Radical Bookstore”)

Alas, in the time it took to write this, the listing – at just $349,000, if you can believe it – went from active to pending.
