This c.1900 Home is Close to Great Barrington’s Main Street: $399K

This week, Upstater is headed north to Great Barrington, MA.

This four-bedroom beauty was built in 1900 and needs some updating, but is worth a bit of work.  The exterior is covered in creamy yellow siding with green shutters.

A covered porch wraps around the house. The gray floor needs some scraping and repainting, and the railings and columns probably need some touchups, too.

Open the vintage front door into the floral-wallpapered foyer. The floors here are original, and you can see the vintage steam-heat radiators that warm the house.

The foyer is a floral explosion, but we’re digging the bones of this place—especially that sturdy staircase and the paneled door with a glass doorknob.

This bright dining room is off the foyer. It’s got a big bay window with clever storage underneath it. The floor is well-worn and needs refinishing, but that big, built-in pantry with glass doors is a keeper.

It actually passes through…

…to a butler’s pantry that houses the refrigerator and a long row of upper and lower cabinets. That aqua Formica countertop is a love-it-or-hate-it option.

Wow, this kitchen is huge. There’s more of that aqua Formica, and tons of vintage white kitchen cabinets. Check out that stainless-steel sink, and the watered-glass tile that wraps the room at chair-rail height and fills the backsplash. There’s a door to the yard next to a modern gas range—and of course, we can’t ignore that cast-iron cooking stove! Although much of the kitchen begs for a redo, we would absolutely keep that stove.

The other side of the foyer leads to this parlor, with a more subdued wallpaper and handsome wood floors.

The living room off the parlor has a fireplace with gorgeous green tile surrounding a cast-iron wood stove. Everything about this room is gorgeous (minus, maybe, that wallpaper, but that’s a relatively easy fix). The windows curve in a bow on one side of the room, next to a bookshelf snugged up against the fireplace.

A glass door separates the living room from this sunroom, which has an interesting tiled floor but otherwise needs a lot of repair.

Head upstairs to this sun-soaked landing…

…before reaching this equally bright top-floor hall. There’s more of that floral wallpaper, and gorgeous wood floors.

There’s a half-bath on the main level, and this full bath on the second floor that’s shared by all four bedrooms. It’s got vintage blue fixtures to match the blue walls and baseboards, with white tile accents. It looks like there’s just a shower here; the listing doesn’t describe the bathroom in detail.

This blue bedroom is big and sunny.

It’s got this cute, walk-in closet with a pretty window that faces the street. The floor needs to be replaced, and the walls and baseboards need scrubbing and repainting.

This room is painted a cheery yellow, and shows off the vintage trim, paneled doors, and glass doorknobs iconic to its age.

The third bedroom is a little more basic, in white, but beautiful in its own way with gleaming wood flooring and big windows.

The last bedroom has an intriguing door (which probably leads to the walkup attic) with a cabinet above.

The house is on two-tenths of an acre, with a winding driveway that leads to a detached, two-car garage. The property is a three-minute walk to Main Street for shops like the Pleasant & Main cafe and general store.
