First off, from the “We Didn’t See That One Coming” Files: Ever-popular Catskills winter sports destination Hunter Mountain is set to be purchased by Peak Resorts Inc. for a bargain-basement $36.8 million, so reported the WSJ yesterday. Hunter From the Peak Resorts press release:

“Timothy D. Boyd, president and chief executive officer, said, ‘Hunter Mountain, under the stewardship of the Slutzky families, has become one of the iconic ski resorts in the Northeastern United States. Its reputation as one of the premier snowmaking resorts in the East makes it a perfect fit for our portfolio and strategy. We look forward to continuing the rich tradition the Slutzky families have built.'” (The mention of the Slutzky family refers to families of Orville and Israel Slutzky, the brothers who founded the ski resort back in the 1950s in order to bolster the local tourism economy.) What does this mean for the once family-owned Hunter? We’ll have to wait and see. Completion of purchase is set to take place before the end of 2015.

In other news, Belleayre Mountain is projecting its 2015 opening day for this week. Friday, December 4, to be exact. They’ve been making snow like it’s there job up there, so keep your eyes on the Belleayre website and FB page. As for Belleayre’s future, the FEIS was accepted for the construction of Belleayre Resort at Catskill Park back in July after 16 years of modifications to the resort.
