Thrifty Craftsman in Delaware County Village, $135,000
Kandy Harris | December 2, 2015Looking for a bargain? Need a property that lists for less than $50/square foot but you don’t feel like putting a ton of work to fix it up? Well, then we suggest you head up north into the Catskill Mountains and west to Delaware County. There, you’ll find this c.1918 two-story Craftsman in the middle of Hancock village. It’s a classic, for sure. When we close our eyes and conjure up a quintessential Craftsman Foursquare, it looks pretty darn similar to this one. You can see the still-lingering Victorian influence on the exterior in that if you squint just so and imagined triangles where the squares are, it might be a Queen Anne.
Another Victorian mainstay follows us to the interior in the form of pocket doors, double doors which slide into “pockets” inside of the walls. The woodworking and exquisite built-in cabinetry, however, gives this Craftsman’s heart away for sure. And, this is no tiny house at nearly 3000 sq. ft. with 4 beds/1.5 baths, formal dining room (if you can call anything about a Craftsman “formal”) , large kitchen, full basement, and full walk-up attic. Yard is small yet private with a second floor balcony that overlooks it. Located approximately 2.5 hours from NYC but, at the risk of sounding cliche, feels like a bazillion miles away.
222 Wheeler Avenue, Hancock (James Serio Real Estate)
