The Putnam County village of Cold Spring was our Town of the Week back in September 2011, which is long ago enough to take another look now. We’ve explored properties here a lot, particularly on Wednesdays for Car-Free Country House potential, because it’s one of the best places to attempt living in upstate New York without a car…if you can afford it. Cold Spring is pretty. It has a great downtown area. It’s close to incredible nature beauty. It’s a major commuter hub and bedroom community. So the houses ain’t cheap, but they sure are fun to look at.

Here’s something published in Chronogram Magazine from their April 2013 edition:

Situated along the Hudson in the town of Philipstown, Cold Spring offers spectacular views across the river. But Cold Spring is so much more than just a pretty face; all one has to do is a take a drive into town (or a train ride to the Metro-North station) and spend an afternoon walking its streets, visiting its shops, and talking to its townspeople to know that within Cold Spring beats the heart of a nature-loving Bohemian artist.” Read the rest of the article here.

Culture and history collide in Cold Spring, with a plethora of art galleries, music venues like the Living Room, and top-notch eateries, including the Hudson House and Cathryn’s Tuscan Grill. It’s also close to Garrison and all of its various charms.

There’s plenty on the housing market with most of the prices resting in the $300,000 to $500,000 range. Plus, there are some seriously beautiful million dollar homes up for sale, including this Gothic Victorian that made us stop in our tracks:

Drool-worthy Gothic Victorian in Cold Spring

In the Chronogram article referenced earlier, Cold Spring Chamber of Commerce President Vincent Tamanga describes his town thusly: “Quaint and charming, with a nouveau twist that compares with the sophistication of Manhattan.”

Cold Spring is located approximately 1 hour, 3 minutes from NYC.
