Town of the Week: Millerton

If you’re anything like us, you’ve grown weary of hearing small, quaint, artsy town in upstate New York compared to Brooklyn. Case in point: NYT ran an article two years ago entitled “Williamsburg on the Hudson” on how various places upstate compare to their downstate counterparts. The article included mention of the Dutchess County village of Millerton. The article cited the Oakhurst Diner’s sophisticated take on typical American diner fare, not to mention Millerton’s galleries and antique stores, in order to draw the usual comparisons.
Fair enough; we understand the temptation to acquaint towns in upstate New York to neighborhoods in the city. However, sometimes, you just had to take these towns on their own terms and leave your comparisons at the door. Millerton is, indeed, fun, quirky, artistically-inclined, walkable, and delightful. Located in eastern Dutchess county right on the Connecticut border, Millerton was named on Budget Travel’s list of 10 Coolest Small Towns back in 2007. Back in the 19th century, Millerton was a railroad stop in the town of North East, where the main industries were farms and iron mills, providing goods to NYC. Now, it’s an artists enclave and destination for those who love to wander and shop, coffee in hand, taking in the small town vibe.

We had fun exploring the real estate market in Millerton. Inventory seems robust, and we found everything from luxurious properties and working farms priced in the millions all the way down to adorable country cottages in the mid-$100s. All of those expensive properties skew the numbers when you look at the average listing price on Trulia (just over a million, week ending March 27), but the median sales price is a much more reasonable $300,000. Lots of land available on the market, too.
Millerton was recently named one of Hudson Valley Magazine’s 8 Hot Hometowns, along with last week’s Town of the Week, Pleasant Valley. The village is located approximately 1 hour, 52 minutes from NYC.
