Staatsburg Historic Site

The hamlet of Staatsburg in Dutchess County is one our go-to areas when we have out-of-town guests, especially during the spring and summer. It’s handy for seeing some great Hudson Valley sites without having to drive all over Christendom to see them. Here are the places to hit during your visit:

The Staatburg Historic site. Go here first and tour the 19th century Beaux Art mansion once occupied by Ogden Mills and Ruth Livingston Mills, his wife.

– Hike at Ogden Mills and Ruth Livingston Mills State Park.

– Explore Norrie Point Environmental Center and state park adjoining the historic site.

– Play golf at the Dinsmore.

– Head back to Rhinebeck for lunch at Gigi. Or Terrapin’s Red Bistro. Or Arielle. Etc.

We’d also at the John Hendricks house and barn to the list of sites, but it’s a private residence. Anyway, Staatsburg is gorgeous with rolling pasture land and views across the Hudson River. It also has the uncanny ability to make you feel like you’re out in the sticks, but it’s no more than a few miles from Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Tivoli, and Hyde Park. Staatsburg does not have a town center, but it does have a public library housed in an adorable Gothic-style chapel built during the mid-1800s.

Real estate-wise, Staatsburg isn’t exactly the first place you’d start if you’re looking for a bargain, but there are some foreclosures and a couple of five figure properties currently listed on the market. The bulk of the goods, however, are in the $400,000 to $300,000 range with the most expensive property clocking in at close to $2 million.
