Rumor has it that the current heat wave is set to pass over the weekend, which means it’s time to start making plans outside of house and air conditioning. This weekend, Basilica Hudson is hosting its first annual film festival entitled BasilicaScope. The festival’s tagline “from lo-fi to hi-fi to sci-fi with nothing in between” promises to give viewers a full range of film experiences, kicking off this evening (Thursday) with the documentary The Observers. Weatherophiles, take note: The film, which was made in 2011 and directed by Jacqueline Goss, is set in Mt. Washington, New Hampshire and follows a pair of climatologists who record the weather in what the film’s description calls, “the windiest mountain in world”.

Other films on the schedule for the weekend include a short animated silent film called Madame Tutli-Putli, as well as the 2013 Sundance Award-winning movie Crystal Fairy, starring Michael Cera (forever known in our hearts as George Michael from Arrested Development) and Gaby Hoffman. The festival ends on Sunday, July 21st with an afternoon screening of Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer, directed by Charlie Ahearn. The festival is also showing that film during a special late night screening on Friday, free of charge.

Tickets for each film are $10 a pop, but children under 12 get in for free. You can purchase tickets at the door, or you can get a weekend pass right here for $75. If you’ve never been to the Basilica before, this is a great chance to check out the space. Formerly a 19th century factory located near the Hudson River waterfront, the Basilica has been transformed into one of the coolest art and performance spaces in the entire Hudson Valley. But don’t take our word for it; go see it for yourself. Coming from the city? Take the Amtrak to the Hudson station, step off the train, and you’re there.
