High-quality theatrical performances are difficult enough to find, but finding them for free is even more elusive. This is where the Franklin Stage Company differentiates itself from other stage companies in the area. So determined is the company to provide audiences with good theater that they’ve made all of their productions free-of-charge…with donations gratefully accepted, of course. The FSC’s 17th season is in full swing. A pair of one-act plays will be presented together during the last weekend in June: George Bernard Shaw’s Village Wooing, and Alfred de Musset’s A Door Must be Kept Open or Shut.

The added bonus of seeing a production at the FSC is that audiences get to experience the shows in historic Chapel Hall, a grand 19th century Greek Revival that was once part of the prestigious Delaware Literary Institute, where institute students delved into the classics, and the Chapel Hall auditorium, where current productions are staged, stood as the Institute’s chapel (hence the name). The FSC website provides a lot of information about the space, which you can read about in their History of the Building page.

Other FSC productions this summer include a staged reading of the comedy Jane by S.N. Behrman, The Winter’s Tale by Shakespeare, plus a few others by FSC-hosted companies, such as the Mettawee River Theater Company. For more information on upcoming productions, as well as where to grab dinner in Franklin before a performance, visit the FSC website.
