Upstater Destinations: Greene County Drive-in Movie Theaters
Kandy Harris | July 12, 2012The drive-in movie: We can hardly utter those words without smelling the intoxicating aroma of hot popcorn mingled with freshly-cut grass. If hitting a drive-in is one of your favorite summertime activities, as it is ours, you’re in luck. Greene County has two drive-in theaters open during the warmer months.
In Coxsackie, one of our favorite towns in upstate NY, there’s the Hi-Way Drive-in, with four screens, each featuring two movies of a different rating (one screen for the family movies, one screen for teenage movies, two screens for adult movies). Admission is $8 for ages 12+, $3 for kids 3-11, and free for under 3.
The Greenville Drive-In in the town of Greenville (this week’s Town of the Week) is much smaller than the Hi-Way with only one screen. Originally opened in 1955, the Greenville Drive-In sat for years unused, looking for a buyer to bring it back to life. It’s open for this summer the first time since 2009, and in addition to movies, the Drive-In will be holding special events and flea markets throughout the season. You can check out the latest updates on their official Facebook page.
The Hi-Way Drive-In is located on Route 9W between Coxsackie and Catskill (GMAP). The Greenville Drive-In is located on Route 32 (GMAP). Now grab the kids (or not!), gas up the car, and head upstate for some summer movie fun!
