Upstater Destinations: The Bard Spiegeltent

Back in our younger days (just a few years ago, before you start making cracks about dinosaurs roaming the earth, etc.), we used to go to Bard College’s Spiegeltent late at night, after the dinner service was over, after the main acts had already performed their encores, and we would dance the night away, tipsy on white sangria that came from industrial-sized coolers, served in plastic cups. It’s been a while since we’ve been able to party quite that hearty, but the Spiegeltent remains a unique summer fixture, year after year, ever-youthful with twinkling lights and all the whimsy of a gypsy carnival that rolled into town under cover of darkness…and just as fleeting.

more after the jump…

This year, the Bard SummerScape Spiegeltent promises to be every bit as spectacular as previous years, starting off with a bang on Saturday, July 5th and continuing every weekend through the second weekend in August. Known for bringing a wealth of cabaret acts to the Belgium-style tent, Bard knows how to put on quite a party with acts like the Bindlestiff Family Circus (a Spiegeltent mainstay), as well as The Hot Sardines, a band whose members include a faithful Upstater reader. They’re playing at the tent on July 12th, bringing their signature brand of Dixieland/Gypsy/Every other kind in between-style of jazz, complete with stride piano and a brass section. Dinner and drinks are always served during the shows, and afterward, you can still around dancing, drinking, and reveling until 12:30pm.

For more information on what’s happening at the most happening tent in upstate New York, visit the Bard Spiegeltent page. Don’t forget to look around the website at the other Bard SummerScape events. There’s bound to be something for everyone to enjoy, even those of us who can’t hang with the kids like we used to do.
