Upstater Destinations: Woodstock Film Festival, Oct 3-6

 woodstock film festival

Upstate New York is truly the place to be during the fall. You’ve got your pretty leaves, and you’ve got your Garlic Festival. You’ve got your U-Pick trips to various orchards for way too many apples (which, this year, apparently, means you’ll be picking those apples in 80 degree weather). You’ve got Restaurant Week coming up next month, and, you’ve got the Woodstock Film Festival this weekend.

The list of movies playing at various theaters in Woodstock, Rhinebeck, Rosendale, and Saugerties (yes, that’s new this year) is nearly staggering, which gives you plentiful opportunities to catch some great indie films at lots of times throughout the weekend. This afternoon, you can watch documentaries at Upstate Films, the Bearsville Theater, or the Woodstock Playhouse in Woodstock (State of Control at 1:15pm at Upstate, To Be Forever Wild at the Playhouse at 1:20, or God Loves Uganda at Bearsville Theater at 2:30), not to mention other stuff in the evenings at all of those theaters. There are films playing tonight at the Rosendale Theater and Upstate Films 1 and 2 in Rhinebeck, as well. In fact, there are so many movies on tap, best to check the official Schedule of Events for times and dates, which are subject to change, before you head out the door.

Added bonus: The Orpheum Theater in the village of Saugerties has been added to the schedule of movies during the Festival, coinciding with the wildly-popular First Friday events happening in the village on October 4. Whoa, Saugerties. Way to step up your game. The Maverick Awards take place at BSP in uptown Kingston on Saturday night (you can get ticket info on that right here), followed by a swinging after-party at Keegan Ales in Kingston, which will feature a live performance of selections from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, performed by the Paul Green Rock Academy House Band, starting at midnight, per Rocky Horror tradition. Pitchfork Militia will be opening.

Whew. Anyway, we’ll be hobnobbing at Maverick Awards and the after-party, so we’ll see you there. For more information on absolutely everything going on at the WFF, check out their website.
