Why a “Kit” House Makes Sense

  |  November 19, 2015

For over 70 years, Lindal Cedar Homes has been producing pre-engineered Post & Beam homes that are assembled on-site by local craftsmen. As beautiful as these homes are, they are essential “Kit” homes, a concept pioneered by Sears Roebuck & Co. which sold its Craftsman mail order homes from 1908 to 1940. We call our “Kit” the Lindal Materials Package, which includes all of the design, architecture, engineering, and materials for the structure, such as lumber, posts & beams, siding, windows, doors, trim, hardware, stairs, railings, decks etc. – everything needed to build, delivered efficiently to the site.

The advantages of a Lindal home over a pre-fab or modular home are many. First, we evaluate your site and work with you to design a home that will best use the features of your property aesthetically, environmentally, and for cost effectiveness. Then, we are able to develop the design with you to fit your lifestyle, needs, and budget. Our Post & Beam building method allows for almost unlimited design choices, such as walls of glass and open floor plans. All of the Lindal materials are packed very efficiently and delivered by rail and truck to your site, ready to be assembled.  Pre-fab and modular homes offer very little design flexibility, necessitated by their very nature of production and by the fact that room sizes are limited by road lane width.

Quality control, cost, and energy efficiency are also advantages of a Lindal Cedar Home.  Lindal uses premium grade lumber, plywood (not particle board), engineered components, and architectural quality posts & beams, and offers beautiful Western Red Cedar siding, windows and trim. All materials are guaranteed, as well as inspected and inventoried before they leave the Lindal factory and again when they arrive on-site. Delivery costs are less than pre-fab or modular because Lindal is not shipping empty “boxes” across the country.  All Lindals are “Green from the Ground Up”, using sustainable materials engineered for exact local conditions and advanced framing systems that increase the efficient use of materials and allow for energy saving insulation and sealing techniques.

You are free to select all your own appliances, cabinets, countertops, fixtures, etc., which gives you exactly what you want – not a limited selection – and complete control over the cost, quality, and look of the things going into your home.
