An Old-Fashioned Poetry Barn-Raisin’

Brooklyn-based Rooster Moans Poetry Collective is fixin’ to raise up a cooperative poetry barn somewhere in the Catskills, but they needs some funds to make it happen. That’s where their Indiegogo campaign “Praise the Poetry Barn” comes in to play. According to the online poetry workshop cooperative’s director Lissa Kiernan, they’re still scouting locations in the Catskill Mountains for their eco-friendly barn which will serve as a writing retreat center, meeting space, workshop, and all-purpose gathering spot for writers and poets looking to get out from in front of the screen and into the kind of natural environment that gets the creative juices flowing. Plus, the barn will be sustainable and green in design, with geothermal heating and cooling and solar power.

Unlike Kickstarter, Indiegogo campaigns receive all the funds even if they do not meet their goal, so truly every little contribution counts. And the perks of contributing? Gift certificates for online writing workshops (Rooster Moans bread and butter), poetry anthologies, the opportunity to get your name burned into the one of the barn boards, and an invitation to attend their launch party.

Right now, the campaign has raised $1,870 with a goal of $12,500 left to go. Deadline is February 11, so there’s only 12 days left to contribute, which you can do right here. If their goal is met, they plan to open their doors during the summer/fall of 2014. If they fall short, said Lissa Kiernan, they’ll shoot for spring/summer 2015.

We can’t wait to find out where it will be located and what it will look like when it’s complete. Any suggestions for where in the Catskill the barn should be built?
