West Kortright Centre in East Meredith is hosting The Fairfield Four gospel concert this Saturday, November 7 at 7 pm, as part of the center’s 40th anniversary festivities. The Fairfield Four, who had performed at the West Kortright Centre in the past, are returning this weekend with the best of gospel music. The group won a National Heritage Award, and a Grammy for Best Traditional Gospel Recording. For more information, visit westkc.org.
Contemporary Catskill Watercolors at the Erpf Center
Erpf Gallery at the Catskill Center in Arkville is hosting an art show “Contemporary Catskill Watercolors,” featuring the works of artist Michael Mendel. Born in Germany, Mendel and his family fled the Nazi regime, and came to the United States in the 1940s. As a graphic designer in New York City, Mendel has done work for record labels, and designed album covers for various artists including Tony Bennett. As a watercolorist, he has exhibited in numerous galleries including The National Arts Club in New York City, and the Woodstock Arts Fair. Mendel’s work is regarded as representational. His watercolors will remain on view at the Erpf Center through January 8, 2016. For more information, visit catskillcenter.org.
The D & H Canal Museum
The D & H Canal Museum in High Falls is showing “Rails to the Catskills” documentary film by Tobe Carey this Saturday, November 7 at 6 pm. “Rails to the Catskills” explores the history of the railroads in the Catskill Mountains with roots in the canal industry of the 1820s. The documentary uses original footage, as well as vintage and contemporary photography, postcards, rare films, and newspapers archives. For more information, visit canalmuseum.org.
Glimmerglass Film Days in Cooperstown
The third annual Glimmerglass Film Days take place in Cooperstown this weekend November 5 – 9, showing 18 films, and presenting several panel discussions, a guided hike and bird walk, and a companion art exhibit. The event is curated by Margaret Parsons, founder and director of the film program at the National Gallery of Art. The selected films explore the theme of “Sacred Places,” and highlight places of natural and cultural significance, both home and around the world. The screenings and events are taking place at the Fenimore Art Museum, National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, The Farmers’ Museum, The Smithy gallery, Cooperstown Distillery, and Templeton Hall.
